Joe Mullen is among the most-accomplished American players in National Hockey League history. He wore the Team USA jersey at the 1979 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship and three Canada Cups (1984, 1987, 1991).

Mullen was a three-time NHL All-Star and two-time recipient of the Lady Bing Trophy. He was the first American to record 500 career goals and 1,000 career points in the NHL. Over 17 seasons, he tallied 502 goals and 561 assists in 1,062 games. Besides the Penguins, Mullen also played for the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, winning one with Calgary in 1989 and two with Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992.

Mullen recently completed his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2006-07, he was an assistant coach for the American Hockey League's Philadelphia Phantoms. He also served as an assistant coach for the Penguins from 2000-06 and was head coach of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for part of 2005-06.

The New York native was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000. Also, he received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1995.
